The European Blockchain Sandbox
– Objectives and First Experiences
by Marjolein Geus

The European Blockchain Regulatory Sandbox for innovative use cases involving Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLT) is an initiative of the European Commission.

The sandbox establishes a pan-European framework for regulatory dialogues to increase legal certainty for innovative blockchain solutions. Funded by the Digital Europe Programme and delivering on the SME strategy, the sandbox runs from 2023 to 2026 and annually supports 20 projects including public sector use cases on the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure.

Projects are chosen through calls for expression of interest.  Every year, the most innovative regulator participating in the sandbox will also be awarded a prize. This pan-European Blockchain regulatory sandbox is set up and operated by a consortium under the leadership of Bird & Bird and its consulting arm OXYGY supported by blockchain experts of Warren Brandeis (formerly known as WBNoDE) and web-designers of Spindox, which has been procured through an open call for tenders in 2022.

The selection and the award process are overseen by a panel of prominent professors from different European universities consisting of  Professor Roman Beck (IT-University, Copenhagen), Professor Soulla Louca (University of Nicosia, Cyprus) and Professor Walter Blocher (Universities of Kassel and Vienna).

During this presentation, Marjolein Geus (Bird & Bird lead partner for this project) will discuss the objectives of this ambitious project and the first experiences following the selection of the blockchain use cases for the first cohort.

Inflection Point for Blockchain:
A Good Hammer Looking for the Right Nails
by William Zhang

As the modern era of blockchain applications is entering its teenage years, it is high time for us to reflect on what it really offers for the digital world of today and tomorrow?

After some analyses, this talk will attempt to paint a picture of the best-case scenario for blockchain-based DeFi and other applications to flourish at the global level in the next-generation financial market infrastructure.

The European Blockchain Service Infrastructure
by José Manuel Panizo Plaza

The European Blockchain Service Infrastructure (EBSI), an initiative supported by the European Commission and the European Blockchain Partnership, is working to develop a trusted infrastructure and technical specifications to onboard trust frameworks.

EBSI in cooperation with the use cases has established the EBSI Verifiable Credential Playbook, a complete profile to help actors to answer key questions and help them understand how to implement digital exchange of trusted and verifiable information.

This playbook is supported by guidelines, specifications, services and a decentralized network,  according to open standards and the new paradigm demanded by citizens and organizations.

Let’s discover together how EBSI can support the European digital landscape.
